Kindergarten Program6100 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23226
Our goal is to create a stimulating and hands-on learning experience for each individual child which promotes intellectual, physical, and social/emotional development.
Wilson Language makes reading fun for students while laying the groundwork for life long literacy. All five areas of reading (phonic awareness, phonic/word sounds, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) are incorporated into this multi-sensory (sequential) curriculum. Spelling and handwriting are integrated, as is literature-based reading instruction.
Go Math is designed to facilitate individual conceptual development, as students use manipulatives, pictures, and learning modules to build understanding of math principles. Students are actively engaged in reason, then transition from concept on skill comprehension, and conclude with the acquired skills needed to solve problems in context independently.
Kindergarten students embrace RVA with a Science curriculum built around the James River, watersheds, and conservation. Social Studies comes to life with our “On My Street” unit, taking field trips to various businesses and learning how we are a part of our community.
Kindergarten students participate in PALS (Phonological Assessment Literacy Screening) in the fall and spring, and receive report cards every nine weeks during the academic year.
Our Kindergarten Team
My name is Cheryl Alexander and this is my 2nd year teaching Kindergarten at WDS! I have been teaching for 24 years (21 in K and 3 in Pre-K) and I love helping children learn to read and write. WDS has a great Kindergarten program because we have small classes and we can learn and play. I am looking forward to a great year of fun with my new students!
My name is Suzy Miller and I have been in the education field for 34+ years! This will be my first-year teaching at WDS. I am looking forward to getting to know my students and families and can’t wait to get the school year started!
Kindergarten Instructional Assistant
My name is Timberly Cox and this is my 6th year in education and 2nd year working as the Kindergarten IA. I love the families at WDS, especially getting siblings of past students when they move up to my department. I’m looking forward to teaching our students about the James River. I love how excited the students are about science and can’t wait to share the fun things we have planned for them this year!

Our Teaching Philosophy
The WDS teaching philosophy is derived from Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning.
These allow the educators at WDS to provide learning experiences. WDS is licensed by the State of Virginia and has been nationally accredited through the National Accreditation Commission for the Association for Early Learning Leaders since 2015. WDS was the past recipient of the Best Day Care & Preschool in Virginia Living Magazine and was included in Hanover Researches Best Practices in Pre-Kindergarten. Some of WDS’s Community Partnerships include the Faison School of Autism, Virginia College, Richmond Association for Directors of Early Childhood Education and Richmond Early Childhood Association.
After School Program
WDS provides an After School program for students in Kindergarten – Fifth Grade.
Daily activities for our After Schoolers include snack, a supervised homework room, planned indoor activities, afternoon enrichments, and outside play.
